Chai ka adda

When all you want to do is have chai, Mecca Cafe in the Johnson Market is worth a visit.

Mecca Cafe is the third shop in the Johnson Market building (from the mosque side). It is an adda (hang out place) in the typical sense. Frequented by mostly guys from the surrounding areas & offices, Mecca Cafe is pretty ordinary & it is this character that makes it appealing. There is never a dull moment in the cafe. While the owner is busy rummaging the cash drawer to hand over change to a waiting customer, two guys run all around the small seating area inside serving chai, biscuits, Naan & somosas. The tables are occupied most of the time and as a result there are people standing outside as well.

Meet up here, order a chai, light a cigarette & get talking. That is pretty much what most of them do there. I got accustomed to this place as I studied in a school in the vicinity of Johnson Market. The tea served there is the way I prefer it, simple, good & hot. Its one of those no frills place where the items available are listed on a board instead of a menu & the service quick. You have to just walk in order, drink & eat and pay while you are walking out. As simple as that. Tea (regular & lime), Somasa, Naan & biscuit is what you will get there. While the maximum cost of something available there is only Rs 3.50 Tea is sold for Rs 3 a glass.

Ah! I just love the lemon tea they make. I used to stay in that area at a company guest house for almost a year and many evenings there was a ritualistic visit to this place and then Fanoos in the next street. Being a vegetarian, I felt lost at Fanoos, but all these places around Jhonson market were worth a visit just for experiencing cultural diversity of Bangalore.
    Nice to see this post!
