Spare our Santa!!
Walking by a newly opened big mall on old madras road, on a Christmas goodies flooded floor I spotted this cutout of Santa promoting ‘Scotch bright’….yes, the same scrub used to clean the un-cleaned…
The combination made me think! Why on earth can anyone relate Santa with this item, all the nice feeling’s I had about the Devine Saint Santa (the sweet dreams, goodies and gifts and the tenderly smiling Santa!!) got cleaned in a scrubby way!! May be the agency who was desperate to relate him with anything must be running out of imagination pool and their creative tanks needs a scotch bright themselves!! I feel like giving them a big BOOOOOOOO….Spare the Santa for the kids, you @#$^#$@!!
Selling idea’s or concepts is cool when it brings a great smile on consumer’s face but here me and Priti (my better half) looked at each other and smiled away with a pity for those ‘Creative’ guys who must have sold this concept and the guys who must have bought the same on it’s face value without respecting the sentiments all of us have for Santa…
I remember one of my marketing guru friend telling me that in ad world it’s “The client is worth what he gets” and I see this ‘proposition’ has created this wonderful sample to prove it!
well………..was just thinking through your thoughts……and i do appreciate it,but on the flip side i was also wondering if the ad succeeded in what it set out to do ie made you notice and perhaps all of us now!
i guess there is always a thin line between humour and nonsense and it is finally the society’s acceptance which is the cornerstone.
…..and again i think its Business and its Ruthless in all its modest sense.
Interesting blog??…makes you really think beyond the actual concern!
I actually do not see anything wrong with it. Santa Clause is commercialism. The western concept of gifting materialistic things is now called “secular” Christmas. Everybody celebrates the secular holiday. Have you noticed how almost every holiday is now commercialized in India? This is globalization. The world is flat ;-).We are just as consumerist as the wild wild west, eh!
I remember a saying in hindi from my collage days…”Badnam hone se naam to hota hai!”
I beg to differ from your above saying in hindi as i dont think it goes well in this situation, because this is about cleaning and i consider cleaning an important part of our daily living.
I think it is important to slightly move from the archetypes and appreciate some humour!
What do you think about Santa endorsing Undergarments?
well…..
Heh Heh. You should see the Victoria Secret advertising ;-) here in the US.
