There’s no one to fight our fires!

Rather alarming statistics from the Times of India a few days I ago. I read that there are only about 257 firemen for over 70 lakh Bangaloreans. And the National Fire Advisory Council suggests one fire station for a population of 50,000. So for Bangalore’s population of over 70 lakh, there should ideally be at least 130 stations.

However, there are only 11 stations in the city and over 150 posts are lying vacant.

What is worse, is that in case of a Mumbai-like event in Bangalore, the fire fighting department will be extremely ill equipped to handle the emergency. This means that the city is obviously going to suffer quite badly in case of a terror strike. And we all know that with the current spate of attacks, no city is out of sight for terrorists.
