Iyengar Bakeries
Nice to be writing for the MB after a long time. And what might a foodie like me love to start again with? Something connected with food! And its the bakeries that dot every street of our town. More specifically Iyengar Bakeries.
When I came down to Bangalore for the first time in 1997 (and fell in love with the city!), I noticed a curious obsession with bakeries. Every street had one and they all sold similar stuff. Cakes, pastries, buns, flavoured buns, breads … anything that was baked! I used to believe that buying baked products from an Iyengar bakery ensured that it was egg-free. As the realisation set in later, not every Iyenger bakery was a true Iyengar bakery.
Deccan Herald today carried an article about Iyengar Bakeries. I am not able to locate the web version of the piece, but here’s the print edition view of the same. Enjoy reading the same.
Meanwhile enjoy your dilkhushs and cream-buns… but keep a check on those calories! :-)
Hey R_C,
Welcome back! This subject – bakeries – is dear to me as well. Lots of memories – particularly, man, those ” dilkush’s” ! In Chennai, I was very happy to see a number of them bearing ‘Bangalore Iyengar Bakery’ proudly displayed. I regret, howeever, that I did not take pics. Will do, next visit!
Cheers,
Ravi
