TOPIC: Does Retail Advertising Work? Measuring the Effects of Advertising on Sales via a Controlled Experiment on Yahoo!
Abstract
A randomized experiment performed in co-operation between Yahoo! and a major nationwide retailer allows us to measure the effects of online advertising on sales. We exploit a match of over one million customers between the databases of Yahoo! and the retailer, assigning them to treatment and control groups for an online advertising campaign for this retailer and then measuring each individual’s weekly sales at this retailer, both online and in stores.

We find statistically and economically significant impacts of the advertising on sales. We estimate the total effect on revenues to be more than four times the retailer’s expenditure on advertising during the study. Additional results explore differential effects of ads on online and offline sales and on individuals who click the ads versus those who merely view them. Our results provide the best measurements to date of the effectiveness of image advertising on sales, and we shed light on important questions about online advertising in particular.

SPEAKER: David Reiley, Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research

David Reiley is a Principal Research Scientist and a pioneer in the use of field experiments in economics. He has used field experiments to test theories of auction bidding and charitable fundraising, and is currently using experiments to measure the effects of display advertising on advertisers’ sales. Before joining Yahoo! Research, David worked at the Arizona Public Service Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona.

* The walk will happen on 1st June 2008 between Ravindra Kalakshetra and the erstwhile Central Jail
* We begin at 7:30 am sharp – it’s a slightly longish route and there are too many things worth photographing on the route so I think we should start early
* From what I see, I think it’ll be a building-oriented walk. Lots of good buildings in the route

* I’m not sure of parking facilities around the Ravindra Kalakshetra. The nearest bus stop is Town Hall, to where you should get buses from all over the city
* As usual, you don’t need to pay anything. Except for the breakfast of course.
* I would advise you to carry a cap, a water bottle and a camera. I would also advise you to wear comfortable footwear.

I have gone for workshops at PfA and have done some voluntary work for them, and been impressed with this animal shelter and the work they are doing for distressed animals. So I am happy to post an announcement from Ranjan Chacko of PfA. Do participate if you can (though I cannot understand why a marathon event should be scheduled at the height of summer) and make the event a success!

care. PFA (People for Animals) Bangalore takes this opportunity to unite Bangaloreans in also spreading the message of conservation through protection of urban wildlife.

PFA, recognised by the Karnataka Forest Department, is an organisation where we believe and work towards being committed to the rescue and rehabilitation of urban wildlife. Through the shelter in Kengeri, the members of PFA and its volunteers have been successful in giving over 7000 avian, mammals and reptiles, a new lease on life.

The marathon, organised by PROCAM, is also a way of being the voice for the voiceless. And this can be achieved through your participation and commitment.
