About the Play :

[sic] takes place primarily in the doorways and shared hallway of three neighbouring apartments. Meet Theo, the desperate & edgy
amusement park ride theme music composer, the struggling and ever-broke writer Babette, and Frank, the queer, happy-go-lucky
aspiring auctioneer. See them humorously trudge through the haunting morass of everyday drudgery and the biting emptiness of big city life. Watch, as the three of them come together to discuss, flirt, argue, share their dreams and plan their futures with unequal degrees of deep hopefulness and abject despair. [sic], chosen as one of the Best American Plays of 2002, is a neurotic, bittersweet comedy about the “quarter-life crisis”, and unfolds as three lives collide in one common corridor.

ART

BY

YASMINA REZA

Art, a French play written by Yasmina Reza, adapted in English, by Christopher Hampton, is a play, that revolves around three diverse and minimalist products of human nature. Three characters, aesthetes in their own right, questioning their individual prejudices against each other.

Serge, a modernist, a puritan, but an afterthought of delusion. Marc, characterized by the epitome of self-acclaim and classicist snobbery and Ivan, an oblivious leaf, which flows in whichever direction the wind blows.

The three friends collide subtly into each others’ perspective and push each other into an overwhelmed sense of egoistic urge towards moral self defense, bringing out the extremes of human nature in the most sublime of ways. The simplistic portrayal of a relationship severed at the seams, encompassing Art as its supposed to be, universal and conflicting.

natural players , differential lighting and apt music makes art a worth while watch .( all this plus a not so creative tribute to Michael jackson)

“Citizen Josh at Ranga Shankara”

Josh Kornbluth will be presenting his hilarious and provocative one-man show at Ranga Shankara on Wed, Aug 19th at 7:30 PM. A Jonathan Reinis Production, ‘Citizen Josh’is written and performed by Josh Kornbluth in collaboration with Arena’s Associate Artistic Director David Dower. In this production, Kornbluth examines and engages the fundamentals of democracy through his entertaining and moving autobiographical stories.

In 1980, Josh met every requirement to graduate from Princeton except one — he didn’t do his “senior thesis.” Now, over a quarter-century later, he tracks down his old advisor, a brilliant political theorist named Sheldon Wolin. Josh asks Wolin to help him complete his long-overdue thesis, on the subject of democracy. Josh’s explorations of political theory soon bring him into the “real” political world — as he finds himself at the center of a number of grassroots protests involving his local playground, state education funding, and even global warming. Including a pivotal encounter with former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore, this tale blends recent electoral history with stories from the Civil Rights movement and academia.

Mr. Josh Kornbluth is the author and performer of the celebrated monologues Love & Taxes, Ben Franklin: Unplugged and Citizen Josh, among others. From 2006 to 2008 he hosted the weekly KQED-TV program “The Josh Kornbluth Show,” interviewing such figures as Annie Leibovitz, Alan Alda, Helen Mirren and Michael Tilson.

The tickets are priced at Rs.200 each. For any further details please contact Ranga Shankara at 26493982 or visit our website www.rangashankara.org

"The First Leaf" by, and at, Ranga Shankara

“The First Leaf”, a special play for children in English, will be staged at Ranga Shankara from 26-28 August 2008 at 7.30 pm.

“The First Leaf” is a production of AHA! Ranga Shankara’s Theatre for Children initiative. Padmavati Rao, who has previously served as Assistant Director on Shankar Nag’s popular TV serial, Malgudi Days, directs the play. The translation into English from the original by Shrirang Godbole is by the director. Padmavati has also co-directed AHA!’s other production “Gumma Banda Gumma” in Kannada.

Music for “The First Leaf” is by Bhavataarini, daughter of the famous composer, Ilayaraja.

This play opened in December last year to an appreciative audience of children and adults. Till date, over 6200 children have enjoyed the play through the Deccan Herald’s Newspaper in Education programme.

“The First Leaf” tells the inspiring story of Putti, her brother Dodu and friend Chinna who live in a time of imminent environmental catastrophe, which is as real as today and looms as close as tomorrow. The three young students explore their surroundings through fantasy and fun with the new tenant in their residential complex, who breathes new meaning into all he touches and encounters. The lesson ultimately learnt is one of protecting Plant Earth.
