The Mini Forest in J P Nagar 3rd phase has a one-kilometre stretch of lovely trees, called the Mini Forest. This stretch is broken up into four parts, and it is intriguing that one part alone has been maintained very beautifully, with paved walkways, green grass, plants, communication boards, a playground corner, a yoga corner and so on. The other three parts have been left to their own devices.

Still, having even one part looking so pretty was good…some of it was by neighbouring software companies, who are doing their bit for the environment.

But yesterday, I was not happy to see this on the lamp-posts in the sector:

I thought, initially, that they must be solar charging panels, and went up to two men who were soldering it in place, what it was. “Speakers”, was the laconic reply.

Now I am as fond of music as anyone else; but the idea of some devotional music or Radio Mirchi being played full-blast in the dawn of what should be a quiet morning does get my goat. There are, after all, plenty of walkers who listen to music on their iPods (or old-fashioned Walkmans!)…what is the need to bathe the entire park in waves of sound, early in the morning?

Quite a lot of money seems to have been spent to get these speakers fixed to the light stands…and I cannot help wondering at the cost, and whether the initiative will be worth it….

Once upon a time there was only Deccan Herald & a few others. For most of us who had to know anything that is happening in Bangalore we would either have to wait for the newspaper the next morning or switch on to the 7.30 regional news on Doordarshan. Needless to say a lot has changed since.

Today we have a 24 hour dedicated Kannada news channel, multiple newspapers (both current affairs & business & the tabloid type as well) & the latest entrant is the city based magazines. Of course current affairs magazines have been in existence for a while & have been widely circulated as well in Bangalore. But what is new are the city based magazines. Some of the prominent ones I have laid my hands on include 080, India Today Simply Bangalore – largely distributed with the main magazine & the latest entrant Bengaluru Pages. Probably there is more. (If yes do write in about the others).

All these magazines are not current affairs magazines. So one is not likely to find our politicians on the cover page of any of these magazines unless they have something to do with a story on lifestyle, personal style, gadgets, culture or other such related light stuff.

My favorite among all these city specific magazines is Simply Bangalore. The quality of their content is fabulous & is truly a light read. Be it updates on the new entrants in Bangalore, the niche areas to shop/buy or some of the things people are doing in Bangalore. It is truly a wonderful compilation. There seems to ooze a certain culture out of Simply Bangalore. Bengaluru Pages out with its second edition recently is good but too early to judge its content. The one issue I happened to lay my hands on didn’t seem to have anything that is not already there say in Bangalore Times, the metro areas only supplement of Times of India. 080 is glossy & doesn’t restrict its content to Bangalore. There are a lot of general things in it as well.

With NDTV launching a city specific TV channel for Delhi called metronation, it is about time that Bangalore got one as well. And to me going on the basis of the content of NDTV Good Times (being in Bangalore have no knowledge of how Metronation is) feel they are the best bet to start something about Bangalore. Also in order would be a city specific radio station that is beyond songs. Some nice discussions on the city, its problems, profiling prominent people would be nicely received here.

I was driving down Cunningham Road last week and suddenly saw a large hoarding with a huge 3D model of a laptop. I hit the brakes and heard a squeal of tyres behind me. Oops ! Sorry ! Got to check this out.

I had heard on Radio Indigo about promotions for Lenovo’s new laptop and here it was : larger than life. Lenovo 3000 Y 410 – the laptop with an Audio DJ feature.

There was a staircase near the hoarding and I clambered up to discover that Radio Indigo had actually set up a live feed studio, 20 feet high – right behind the monitor of the 3D laptop. From a synergy point of view, two big names in technology and music, got together to give Bangalore a whole new dimension. An idea that pushed the magic of FM to new heights.

As an advertising professional, I have tracked “outdoor” for years, from a creative point of view. We’ve had cutouts, flip-arounds, unusual sizes, neon signs … but this was an absolute first in terms of going beyond the brief. Just the 3D model of the laptop was unique in itself, but the live feed combined with the promotions was the “real big idea”.

The event had RJs Malavika, Meghana, Ayesha and Rohit Barker hosting their shows live, from 7 am to 8 pm for one whole week. The team also got one-to-one with the people who stopped by for responses, reactions, feedback and promo participation.

Other highlights at this promotion were games for visitors, lots of Lenovo goodies and the grand prize of a Lenovo Audio DJ laptop. This was eventually won by Neha Chaudhary, a 24-year-old fashion accessory designer from Bangalore.

The studio was located behind behind that little window on the monitor

Some more updated about the new radio station, especially about the RJs.

I have been listening to it since yesterday and am impressed with the music they have been playing so far. The list of RJs they have are all completely familiar names to the city, which includes Sihi Kahi Chandru, Shalini of pacho Sreemathi fame, Sindhu – the girl from the movie Nenapirali, Kiran Sreedhar, etc. Upendra is going to host a show by himself. But I am looking forward to listening to the shows from Mimicry Dayanand who can get really funny.

I have to say again that I am mighty impressed with the music they have been playing so far, and if they manage to keep it up, they have me hooked!

I happen to listen this station on this weekend & really felt good about it. The best thing is that the RJ’s over here are quite popular faces of television, Here they don’t mix kannada with english, I happen to listen quite good kannada numbers, Quality is very good etc…
Also BIG 92.7 FM has signed on Kannada popular film star Upendra as the brand ambassador.

It began sometime back as an experiment called Infinity Radio and was started by Kaustubh Srikanth in late 2003 to help independent musicians across the country promote themselves. Based in Bangalore, the experiment expanded to included two more members.

Shreyas Srinivasan and Gaurav Vaz joined Kaustubh in 2005 and formed the nucleus of Infinity Radio.

Today, RadioVeRVe, as it is now called, is all set to ride this wave and change the face of entertainment in India. Drawing on the experience of the many years of intimate involvement with the music scene, the technology advantage and the limitless possibility of the world wide web, RadioVeRVe aims to be at the forefront of the “Indian Independent Music Revolution”.

Shreyas Srinivasan talks about Radio Verve and the exciting plans they have for the future.

1) Since RadioVeRVe an independent venture, do you folks plan to make a business model in the future?

Yes, all of us believe it’s necessary for anything to be commercially viable to sustain itself over a long period of time. We are working on a lot of things which will help us build a business model around RadioVeRVe. We are still nascent, the business model will be built with time.

2) Do you have a lot of volunteers working on the project who do work in their free time? How do you handle the time contraints?

Lot is an overstatement. Practically Gaurav, Kaustubh and Atul and I do majority of the work. Having said that, we do have a lot of people pitching in and helping out in specific issues. We are building a vibrant community which is helping us out but numbers aren’t big simply because at this time we don’t have a lot of tasks to involve too many
volunteers.

Radio VeRVe members from l to r: Kaustubh, Shreyas and Gaurav

3) If a band wants to showcase their work through Radio Verve, what would they have to do?

Just send us the music, either as a CD or as an mp3. We will listen to it and if it suits our requirements we will play it. Our requirements are that the music should be independent and that it should be of decent quality (recording wise). We are very particular about music being independent.

4) What kind of a response have you received so far?

Simply unbelievable, the number of people tuning and writing good things about us has been quite phenomenal. The mainstream media has helped us a lot too, by writing about us and thus helping us reach large number of people. In fact, in the last one month we have been featured in just about every major newspaper in India. The biggest thing though has to be the kind of support we are getting from independent musicians. We set out to build them a platform through which they can express themselves, and their trust and support in this project is very gratifying.

5) What’s your take on the future of Net radio, keeping in mind the bandwidth issues, especially in the Indian context?

Bandwidth requirements are a thing of the past, India is waking up to broadband. We think Internet Radio is a big step forward, the kind of things one can do with internet radio far transcends traditional AM/FM radio. I don’t want to spill too many beans yet but some of the things we are going to introduce on the station in the short future, will show the capability of internet radio as a mainstream medium.
