TOTO FUNDS THE ARTS (TFA), in association with Counter Culture Records (CCR), invites entries for the fifth annual TOTO awards for young budding musicians and bands. The winner of the award has two options: (i) the Rs 50,000 cash prize (to be used towards your music!) OR (ii) a complete record deal from CCR + a music equipment voucher from On-Stage Music (India’s high quality music equipment store) worth Rs 15,000! The record deal will include recording and releasing your debut album across India.

TFA is looking for entries in contemporary music from all parts of India (bands or individuals). The list of genres extends from rock, jazz, heavy metal, trance, house, instrumental, folk, to any genre which is yet to be “born”. The award is open to music in any language.

I attended the Independence Rock festival at Palace grounds last night and watched some amazing performances by some of the best bands from Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin and Trivandrum. While I was being frisked at the security counter at the entrance I spotted two advertisements that brought a big smile on my face. If you’re a fan of Def Leppard or Jethro Tull, you’ll know why. Its Rock ‘n’ Roll Season again in Bengaluru !

Dr K J Yesudas’ inaugural concert for the Ramanavami series at Sri Ramaseva Mandali, Chamarajpet on Ugadi Day (April 7), with the classic pieces like the well-beloved “Vatapi Ganapathim Bhaje” as well as lesser-known padams like “Enanittu Mechisuveno” was good …… but if only he hadn’t also studded the concert with the speech, no, preach, about money, remuneration for artistes, sponsors, and so on….that really did not go with the mood of the concert.

In fact, there are times when I wish that even if lecture-demonstration concerts, there is less of the lecture and more of the singing! But this of course is only my opinion….

But music lovers have many good concerts in store yet, but how people are expected to arrive for a concert at 5 pm on a working day is not something I can understand…nor the different timings on different days. However, there must be some logic to this.

The Mini Forest in J P Nagar 3rd phase has a one-kilometre stretch of lovely trees, called the Mini Forest. This stretch is broken up into four parts, and it is intriguing that one part alone has been maintained very beautifully, with paved walkways, green grass, plants, communication boards, a playground corner, a yoga corner and so on. The other three parts have been left to their own devices.

Still, having even one part looking so pretty was good…some of it was by neighbouring software companies, who are doing their bit for the environment.

But yesterday, I was not happy to see this on the lamp-posts in the sector:

A treat for music lovers! Details in the post below.

I was driving down Cunningham Road last week and suddenly saw a large hoarding with a huge 3D model of a laptop. I hit the brakes and heard a squeal of tyres behind me. Oops ! Sorry ! Got to check this out.

I had heard on Radio Indigo about promotions for Lenovo’s new laptop and here it was : larger than life. Lenovo 3000 Y 410 - the laptop with an Audio DJ feature.

There was a staircase near the hoarding and I clambered up to discover that Radio Indigo had actually set up a live feed studio, 20 feet high - right behind the monitor of the 3D laptop. From a synergy point of view, two big names in technology and music, got together to give Bangalore a whole new dimension. An idea that pushed the magic of FM to new heights.
