The Düsseldorf-based choreographer Ben J. Riepe’s latest work is based on the five-part performance series Practise seeing beauty – Love, Death and the Devil that he created with his company in 2008.

This production starts off where the performance series with its different formats (installation, stage pieces, outdoor-performance) new techniques and means of artistic expression left off. The production is characterised by a synthesis of precise choreographic management of time, movement, space and context on the one hand, and the individual improvisational creativity of all involved artists on the other. And by a delight in powerful images and baroque costumes.

Aesthetic and macabre scenarios emerge from within the depths of the play creating that the audience can enjoy like a glamorous and puzzling parade of pictures.

Ben J. Riepe:

Ben J. Riepe, who studied at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen and later worked with V.A. Wölfl and as a guest dancer in Pina Bausch’s Ensemble, founded his own ensemble in 2004. In March 2009 he was selected as one of four choreographers for the promotion of elites of North-Rhine-Westphalia. With his productions he is on a quest for critical and future-oriented art that transcends the viewer’s and his own artistic expectation with means that are beyond psychologisation, narration and the conventions of contemporary dance.

Ben J. Riepe and his troupe are in India to participate in the World Dance Alliance Annual Summit at New Delhi and will perform in Chennai and Hyderabad before taking the stage in Dhaka, during their South Asia tour.

The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore and India Foundation for the Arts(IFA) are jointly hosting an Arts Education Conference on December 11 – 12, 2009 at The Chancery Pavilion, Residency Road, Bangalore. This conference, perhaps the first of its kind in the country is an extension of Kali-Kalisu a project undertaken by IFA in partnership with the Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan to empower the school teacher through arts pedagogy training workshops under one of IFA’s major funding programmes, Arts Education. This initiative brought multi-pronged Arts Education workshops to over 500 teachers in rural and small-town Karnataka covering Shimoga, Dharwad, Bidar, Gulbarga, Udipi, Coorg and Mandya districts.

This conference hopes to articulate frameworks and directions for Arts Education in the country and will involve a broad range of stakeholders, including policy makers, educationists, administrators, parents and students in the deliberations. Some of the key speakers and discussants of the conference include Prof. Shiv Visvanathan, Mr. Rohit Dhankar, Mr. Karthikeya V. Sarabhai, Mr. Dadi D. Pudumjee, Ms. Maya Krishna Rao, Mr. Sadanand Menon, Mr. Akshara KV, and Dr. Shekhar Seshadri.

The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach. Known in India as the Max Mueller Bhavan, the Institut promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural cooperation. Among other goals in the cultural arena, the Goethe-Institut lays major emphasis on executing and supporting projects that focus on capacity building and infrastructure.

It is a play that has been performed in several Indian languages such as Hindi, Gujarati and Kannada apart from the original in Marathi. With Hakki Harutide Nodidira, Ranga Shankara taps and brings together the best of veteran and young theatre talent in Bangalore. The play premiered on July 17th 2009.

Interestingly, prominent actresses in our midst have played the role of the heroine, Saraswathi (Saru), in various languages. Arundhati Nag has essayed the role in Urdu while B Jayashree has done it in Kannada.

The play is directed by Manav Kaul from Mumbai. Manav Kaul is an actor, writer and director, who has won much acclaim for work like “Shakkar ke Paanch Daane”.

The Course, launched at the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival 2007, provides a unique opportunity to learn the essence of art appreciation by developing new ways “seeing and listening”.

Renowned culture critic Sadanand Menon will spearhead the Theatre and Arts Appreciation Course 2009. A well-known writer on critical issues of politics and culture, Sadanand Menon is also a photographer and stage light designer. He has served as the Arts Editor for The Economic Times.

The course will examine and discuss theatre, cinema, dance, photography and music over six days (spread over two weekends) through lectures, film screenings, plays, as well as interaction with directors and actors. While bringing together a host of people from different backgrounds, the course will thus look at, and analyse the formal structures of various works of art as well as consider them in the context of the historical period and cultural framework in which they were produced.

The course is open to public from the age of 16 years. The course fee is Rs. 4000 (for six days) and the fee includes lectures, film screenings and tickets to plays. The course fee for students is Rs.500. Students will have to bring their id card during booking to avail this offer.

India represents a uniquely diverse subculture that is built by its people, its history, its religion; and the land itself. Yet preceding all its history is the strongest factor that represents the basis for its culture- its wild nascence.

FERA- the exhibition brings to you, various dimensions of this very essence, with “Symmetry” portrayed in the works of Prashanthi Nerallapalli. With origin of the Earth, it was symmetry in the elements that brought about life; it was symmetry in elements that created the land and the water; it was also symmetry in its abstract form that created religion; and it is this symmetry in culture that India still strongly presents its ancient tradition of old; for even today, its people and wildlife are intertwined within this very symmetry.

Being created by symmetry and having supported life on it is “The Land.” The land that supports its wildlife is displayed in classical landscape artwork by Abhijna Anand. It is a manifestation, on canvas, of the glory of the Himalayas, the pride of the mighty rivers, the blissful solitude of the grasslands and the peace of the evergreen forests.

With this came “Life,” represented in the artwork and photography displays of Arjun Srivathsa, Ramnath Chandrashekar and Phillip Ross. Life, in India is a tradition heavily represented by the wild denizens of the forests. It is ‘the tiger,’ upon whom goddess Durga ascends; ‘the elephant’ representing the union of man with god; ‘the serpent’ associated with Shiva- the destroyer. The Essence of FERA brings many more such displays that portray the wild heritage of India.

However, within such wild and cultural traditions, we see forewarnings in the “The Reality,” of today. With issues ranging from water conservation to rural life that gradually modernizes, to create a major conflict between man and the wild, FERA displays the reality through the photography displays of Vivek Vellanki. Eyes are drawn to the threats faced by our culture; the land; the people and the wildlife.

With its various sub-themes, FERA hopes to spread the message of conservation through artworks and photographs which of course are eventually converted into real time conservation efforts.

TOTO FUNDS THE ARTS (TFA) invites submissions for its sixth annual arts awards for young photographers, writers, musicians and bands. There are five awards to be won – one for music (Rs 50,000), two for photography (Rs 25,000 each), and two for creative writing (Rs 25,000 each).

TOTO FUNDS THE ARTS was founded in 2004, in memory of Angirus ‘Toto’ Vellani who was intensely passionate about music, literature, films and the arts. Toto’s untimely demise spurred his family and friends to create a non-profit foundation that would encourage the young to give expression to their artistic ideas. The annual TOTO awards are intended to recognize excellence in the fields of photography, music and creative writing.
