Wondering if this is some dump yard in Kalasipalya? Well, hold back your thoughts. This is bang in the middle of the beautiful Hebbal lake. Take a walk along the boundary of the lake and this is what you will see after a short 100 metre walk. What you see here is hidden behind the vegetation on one of the man made islands on the lake.

The worst part is that this is where migratory birds and fauna around the lake ecosystem live and feed. And what do they get for food everyday? Plastic bags, water bottles, garbage, waste paper and lots of stinking, black, septic water.

Ranga Shankara announces its first internship programme during its upcoming Theatre Festival 2008. Applications are invited from interested candidates before 24 September 2008.

Since its commencement in 2004, the annual Ranga Shankara Theatre Festivals have brought the best of Indian and international theatre to Bangalore. This year’s Festival will provide six interns the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of how a theatre works and to work with India’s leading theatre professionals in a positive and energised environment.

The Festival Internships run for 45 full days, starting on 1 October 2008 and concluding on 15 November 2008. The internships are open to graduates available to work full time for the 45-day period. Graduates in Journalism, Mass Communication and Event Management are especially encouraged to apply. Certificates will be issued to the interns on completion of the internship. The internship is an unpaid position.

The philosophy of the programme is to have interns work with the staff and theatre practitioners on a daily basis in preparation for the Annual Theatre Festival, observing practical applications of skills required in theatre and festival administration and applying those skills to assigned tasks.

Through this exposure to theatre professionals at work—and to their audiences—interns will learn what a Theatre Festival means to the life of a community, and how the life of a community enriches its theatre. Interns will, thus, experience the rewards and challenges associated with producing theatre in the professional theatre community. While every effort is made to make internships a valuable educational experience, interns are expected to perform a variety of tasks, not all of which will be glamorous.

I rarely watch movies. However I was compelled to go to one recently.
I visited Fun Cinemas theater located at Sigma mall, Cunningham road.

The high intensity sound, hygienic atmosphere, made me feel truly high-class.
While I was all excited to watch the movie after a span of 5 yrs, there was pin drop silence all of a sudden.
No time to think what was going on, while I just realized that our national anthem was being played.
Everyone stood up and remained silent; from the old to the young as young as 4 yrs- giving due respect to our anthem.

How often does one feel patriotic?
Breaking all the barriers of religion, caste, creed, sect, it truly made me feel proud to be an Indian.

It was a similar event that occurred at Fame lido located at Lido mall.
Is our anthem being played in all the theaters before the movie is showcased? Or is it just a few of them?
Does everyone feel the same way? Or is it just another movie and another time the anthem is being played and I’m there to watch the movie?
Your thoughts please?

So apparently, our CM of a 100 odd days is not happy with the new airport.

In his list are a few reasons why including the fact that it’s not up to international standards and the facilities for customers are not good enough. Of course, the fact that the airport was not built under his government might just be another reason.

But does he have plans to do anything to make it better is what he didn’t say much about.

I have not travelled to the new airport as yet. But I know the travel times have been anything between 1-3 hours for people depending on where they live, time of day and the state of the roads.

The other slightly alarming news I came across the other day is the number of deaths on the road to the new airport. Since it’s possibly the only remaining good stretch of road, vehicles speed up way out of the limits mowing down animals and pedestrians on the path. Maybe they need to install some kind of speed monitors on this stretch to stop this loss of lives.

Though we wrote a lot about the airport when it was being constructed, there hasn’t been much about the “post-opening” experiences.

Anyone with interesting experiences to share on their travels (to) and travails (of) the new airport?

Hmmm, this is one freaking subject, that people would love to hate. Lots has been told and discussed across every newspaper and TV news. But there is no end to it. Nevertheless, I just thought , let me add my 2 cents.
Couple of days back, I saw an article in the newspaper that some folks from the United States Of America are coming to Bangalore, as consultants, to solve the Bangalore Traffic issues. Ok, whatever, to solve or suggest. It is definitely a good thought. But what really bothered me was that, it was never the issue, that we didnt know what the problem was, and how to solve it. There are more than enough suggestions thrown by across all kinds of Media on this. Its just a matter of implementation. That’s where we really lack. When are the concerned authorities really understand this simple fact. Today when I look into the paper again, I see exactly what I had in my mind from the same folks from US. They said, its the simple issues that need to be taken care, and if done ,most of the issues would be solved. I guess if a firangi says something which we have been saying all the time, it might be taken in a better sense. Probably the accent makes the difference. But if these firangis are acting as a catalyst for the betterment of Bangalore, I dont think its a big price we are paying these consultants. The only part pending is the implementation.

Now to add on to the implementation part, here is something which really puts me off. Everyday I travel via the Marutinagar route towards BTM Layout from Koromangala. Those who have traveled on that small road, would clearly know how slow the traffic can actually move on that road. Now the authorities seem to have got a brilliant idea as to how to further slow down the traffic. They have now built 2 speed breakers within a distance of 100meters. I really cant understand the very need of a speed breaker on such a cramped road . Here’s something for the authorities, A speed breaker is supposed to cut down the speed , not to get the vehicle to a standstill. There is no way that the vehicle can go above 20kmph on that road. Please use some common sense.

Was passing through Indiranagar the other day and found this immaculately maintained
Royal Enfield. The customizing done on the paint job and seating only add to its appeal.
Makes you want to just kick-start the bike and take it for a chakkar.

Its a pity every time you hear the sound of the roaring [sometimes quite feeble] ambulances in Bangalore. There is nothing much , you , as an driver can do, nor the ambulance. That’s the sorry state that we all go through time and again. First of all, for a driver, there is no room to move whichever way, and to add to the predicament no one really knows, which side to move. Till date I haven’t personally seen any rules to guide an driver, as to which side of the road should he/she move.

Abroad, especially in the US, there are fixed rules that all vehicles should move onto the slowest moving lanes and leave the fast moving lanes for the Ambulances or Police etc as soon as one hears the siren. So everyone knows which side to move and so does the Ambulance Driver.
Here everyone is clueless. Its only when one hears the siren next to your ear, you start panicking and start looking for place to move. Please post your opinions and views and any rules which already exist on this front.

Worse, people don’t even bother to give them the right of way. Guys, just think that someone from your family is in the vehicle and you can save a life.

I just hope and pray that first of all the RTO makes some fixed rules and secondly makes everyone aware that these rules exist. The sole link that I have found on the web makes no mention as to where should a vehicle move. Please post your views or ideas on this issue.

This is what I saw right behind my motorbike in the parking area at Palace grounds, soon after attending the Independence Rock Festival last Sunday. And needless to say, I stood there, partially frozen and wonder struck, pinching myself to see if I was hallucinating. The driver was kind enough to allow me to take a few pictures of this masterpiece.

“The First Leaf”, a special play for children in English, will be staged at Ranga Shankara from 26-28 August 2008 at 7.30 pm.

“The First Leaf” is a production of AHA! Ranga Shankara’s Theatre for Children initiative. Padmavati Rao, who has previously served as Assistant Director on Shankar Nag’s popular TV serial, Malgudi Days, directs the play. The translation into English from the original by Shrirang Godbole is by the director. Padmavati has also co-directed AHA!’s other production “Gumma Banda Gumma” in Kannada.

Music for “The First Leaf” is by Bhavataarini, daughter of the famous composer, Ilayaraja.

This play opened in December last year to an appreciative audience of children and adults. Till date, over 6200 children have enjoyed the play through the Deccan Herald’s Newspaper in Education programme.

“The First Leaf” tells the inspiring story of Putti, her brother Dodu and friend Chinna who live in a time of imminent environmental catastrophe, which is as real as today and looms as close as tomorrow. The three young students explore their surroundings through fantasy and fun with the new tenant in their residential complex, who breathes new meaning into all he touches and encounters. The lesson ultimately learnt is one of protecting Plant Earth.
