Two years ago, Ekta Mittal, co-founder, Maraa and Yashaswini Raghunandan, a film maker and artist started working on their film “Behind the Tin Sheets”, a production that documents the lives of workers involved in building the Bangalore Metro.

garage-sale-poster

Here is a synopsis of the film from their website: “There is no simple meaning to the film, it sets out to locate and map multiple meanings from the migrating world(s) of the worker – at home in the city, at work on the Metro, in his dailyness – the mundane and the magic – he emerges as the storyteller. In search of the workers stories, philosophies and fantasies, the film will blend magical elements from their stories within the realistic environment that they inhabit.”

A fellowship from the Centre for Media and Culture Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences supported the making of the film to a certain extent. But the duo need another lakh of rupees to finish the post production including the sound, editing etc.

To help complete the film and mobilize finances, a garage sale is being organised in the premises of Variety Book House on Church Street, from 4-8 pm on Saturday, March 26.

There will be books, trinkets, paintings, Cds/DVDs, t-shirts and other knick knacks contributed by people, available for purchase. You can participate by either donating items, buying items available during the sale or sending money directly to Ekta and Yahas.

For more details, email Ekta at forekta at gmail.com and Zainab Bawa on bawazainab79 at gmail.com.

The launch of the Bangalore Brevets ride will happen on Sunday, December 5. This is a launch ride for a series of brevet rides that will be held in the city next year as qualifiers to the prestigious Paris-Brest-Paris event. More details are here: http://www.bangalorebrevets.in

The event is expected to see nearly 200 cyclists gather to do distances between 50-200 kms! The participants are given 13.5 hours to complete the whole distance of 200kms. There will be time stations along the way, but the ride is going to be self supported. This means that participants will have to take care of their food, water and other needs on the way by themselves – making this event more challenging!

The route is on Airport road, starting from Cubbon Park. It’s going to be a collective mileage of 25,000 Kms that will be logged in, which is more than 60% of equator! (And 8 times Kashmir-Kanyakumari!). This is going to be a totally voluntary effort, run by the very enthusiastic cycling community of Bangalore, comprising of members of Bums on the Saddle, a vibrant initiative to bring about a cycling revolution in the city and Cleated Warriors, a team that is made up of like-minded folks who are passionate about cycling.

So if you’re interested in cycling and want to give this a go, be there on Sunday at Cubbon Park! Remember that you can do smaller distances too if you don’t feel upto the 200k!

iReboot hosts wildlife photography bootcamp for third consecutive year

September will be a pretty busy month at iReboot which is gearing up for the third consecutive year of its most talked about program – the Wildlife Photography Workshop. The entries are pouring in, the program is currently being redesigned and the participants are already rearing to go. In a nutshell, this program combines two most common realms of hobbies- wildlife and photography- which have very good potential of being converted to full-time professions in the long run. iReboot will make the necessary arrangement to have the participants sent off to The Bannerghatta National Park with a qualified, professional wildlife photographer (their previous mentors include celeb names like Kalyan Varma and Amogha Varsha).

butterfly

Students can expect professional guidance from their mentor and learn the basic principles of wildlife photography and most importantly, they can look-forward to a thorough individual evaluation of the pictures taken during Safari’s and various expeditions around the park. The course work of this program has been the main USP of the bootcamp. Participants have shared their appreciation for highly relevant content and have praised it for its detailed structure and synopsis.

Post program perks include a free membership to the Photon Club, where the skill-set of the participants are further nurtured through regular commercial assignments and meet-ups. In addition to this, iReboot ensures that the participants take complete advantage of the resources available for their long-term benefit, such as one-on-one sessions with the mentor, tie-up’s with renowned photography magazines and networking at large.

September 2010 workshop for wildlife photography will be held at the Bannerghatta National Park on the 18th and 19th. Program relevant information can be found on iReboot’s website www.ireboot.com.

The lectures, under the banner of the Yahoo! Big Thinkers India series, bring together academia, scientists, the corporate world and the media.

This quarter, the event will be held on March 19, Friday from 3-5 pm at the Leela Hotel on Old Airport Road.

TOPIC: Does Retail Advertising Work? Measuring the Effects of Advertising on Sales via a Controlled Experiment on Yahoo!
Abstract
A randomized experiment performed in co-operation between Yahoo! and a major nationwide retailer allows us to measure the effects of online advertising on sales. We exploit a match of over one million customers between the databases of Yahoo! and the retailer, assigning them to treatment and control groups for an online advertising campaign for this retailer and then measuring each individual’s weekly sales at this retailer, both online and in stores.

We find statistically and economically significant impacts of the advertising on sales. We estimate the total effect on revenues to be more than four times the retailer’s expenditure on advertising during the study. Additional results explore differential effects of ads on online and offline sales and on individuals who click the ads versus those who merely view them. Our results provide the best measurements to date of the effectiveness of image advertising on sales, and we shed light on important questions about online advertising in particular.

SPEAKER: David Reiley, Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research

David Reiley is a Principal Research Scientist and a pioneer in the use of field experiments in economics. He has used field experiments to test theories of auction bidding and charitable fundraising, and is currently using experiments to measure the effects of display advertising on advertisers’ sales. Before joining Yahoo! Research, David worked at the Arizona Public Service Professor of Economics at the University of Arizona.
