Frames of Mind 2008….

Is a photograph really about what you see? Or is it about how you see what you see?
At Bangalore Photography Club, it is believed that a photograph is about a frame of mind. A perspective. When a frame not only tells you what to see, but what to hear, smell and feel you know it’s more just a snapshot. It’s a true photograph.

Showcasing work of more than fifty artists across photo categories as well as winning photo documentaries, Bangalore Photography Club is delighted to welcome you its third annual photography exhibition, Frames of Mind 08.

Hope to see you there..
Dates : 29th – 31st August 2008 (10am – 7pm)

Conversations with a cab driver

“Stop!” came a voice from nowhere even as the cab screeched to a halt. In the moonless night on a road shorn off its streetlights, the light of the torch thrown full-on to the car was highly disconcerting.

I am not the one for great reflexes but survival is another thing altogether. In those seconds that the driver used to open the car windows, I had taken out my wallet and shoved it down the pouch at the back of the driver’s seat. The thought that I was not carrying my laptop offered additional solace to a heart that had lost its sense of rhythm and poise. Read more

A watery weekend getaway - Hogenakkal

Hogenakkal is located in Tamil Nadu and a part of the river Cauvery and is about 250 metres above sea level. The main attraction of the falls is its vertical drop from a height of 20 metres with a thundering sound. Hogenakkal is also supposed to have healing powers so be prepared to see people dive in (though it would be safer not to). It’s about 2 hours from Bangalore if you take the short route. We decided to take the long route, merely because we missed the right turn on the way :)

We started a little late and reached at a time when the rest of Tamil Nadu (and Karnataka) also decided to pay a visit to this famous falls.

How to be late for a client meeting

PICT0005.JPG

If you want to do lunch in 30 minutes, don’t go to Ruchi. Yesterday, their “unlimited” thali resulted in a delayed client meeting and a very angry client.

Didn’t matter, because I had one of those thalis that got you to loosen your belt and make impolite noises. We were driving past Ruchi on Cambridge Road and my colleague Sumit suddenly hit the brakes. “You must try the Thali out here, it’s more than decent,” he said.

I don’t usually argue about stop-overs or detours, especially when I’m hungry - so we trooped up to the first floor and took a table.

Mirror impressions

I’d not been to Hyderabad since 2 to 3 years and so, when the opportunity to visit/see the city presented itself, I jumped at the chance. However, I had limited personal time at my disposal and was closeted in a conference during the daytime which prevented me from verifying all the positive news that AP seems to be garnering these days on the growth and development front. Still, a couple of takeaways, via pics.

Exiting the Airport, several bold and brightly lit direction signs are visible for the tourist / traveller.

Nanking

CrabAbout a week ago, I was meeting Debbie and a friend (Martin) after an event at Alliance Francaise and we decided to try a place Martin recommended - Nanking Restaurant in Sigma Mall on Cunningham Road. He’s the one who recommended Dahlia to us, so I was hopeful this would be reasonable too.

Nanking is apparently the latest outpost of a restaurant with branches in Delhi and Mumbai. It bills itself as Chinese, not multi-cuisine, and it lives up to the billing. We started with an appetizer that sounded like it would be something like a spring roll, crispy on the outside and a mixed minced meat filling. We also had been craving pork and so asked to try their spareribs. At this point the host asked “do you like crab?” “Yes we love crab.” He disappeared only to return with a GIGANTIC live crab vigorously waving its claws. (The crab in the photo is smaller, I didn’t manage to take a picture of the one we ate.)

“How about this?” “Um, sure!” “Would you like it steamed?” “Can you make it sauteed in black bean sauce?” “Of course.” “We’d like that then.”

More after the cut.

So, can we smell the sampige again?

I hate to say this, but Bangalore does have the ‘Garbage City‘ tag attached to it. So, I was quite happy to read on ndtv.com that the BBMP (Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike) is starting a ”Suvarna Bengalooru Swachha Bengalooru” project, worth Rs. 79 crore to keep the roads of Bangalore clean and tidy. Thankfully, the BBMP has offloaded the work to 30 private agencies as a service contract. I have a feeling the offloading will help the BBMP tremendously.

An often seen sight in any vacant land in the city

Please call the BBMP helpline number (080-64530153) if you have any issues with garbage anywhere in the city. They are promising to act immediately. I am going to be calling this number in a day or two.

Summer time in Bangalore

You can feel the summer setting in. As soon as you wake up there is a certain kind of smell & warmth in the air. Just a few days back we were pulling up our quilts in the early hours of the morning & now without much of an effort we are pushing it away. The fans that were switched off are now running at its lowest speed & as the summer sets in further, the first sound you will hear when you enter any room is that of the fan whirling above.

A restaurant called Tchi!

First of all, getting to this place might be a bit of a challenge! It’s on Edward Road and even if you’ve been here for a dozen years, I bet you don’t know where it is.

We did finally manage to find the place. It’s off Queens Road (and being a one-way, its towards the end), just before you take the right turn to Cunningham Road. And try not to miss it as it’s a one way and you’ll have to drive all the way back again if you do!

Tchi advertises itself as Authentic South Asian cuisine and since it’s not very easy to get good South East Asian food, I had rather high hopes as I’d read a flattering review of the restaurant on a blog.
