Photography Exhibition at Max Mueller Bhavan

Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore, is the venue for “Urban Changes”, and exhibition of the photographs of three people– Clare Arni , Mahesh Shantaram , and Vivek M. , from July 18 to 31, from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm each day. There are also a few photographs by Sohail Abdullah , a Pakistani photographer who lives and works in Karachi.

It is unusual to have a Pakistani showing his creative work in our country; the showing is a great opportunity to interact with the work of someone who hails from a country which is our neighbour and yet inaccessible to most of us.

The roadside aromas of Jayanagar 4th block

As a proud resident of Malleshwaram a few years back, the only the other place I ever wished to live in was - you guessed it - Jayanagar 4th block. For vegetarian middle-class souls, these two areas in Bangalore are worth Paris, London, and New York rolled into one. And not without reason. There are few such places in this universe where one can go around with a list of tasks and get them all done in a single walk. From getting clothes altered, to sipping a cup of coffee and tucking in an idli or two, to saying a hello to a desired God there is a little bit of everything for the mind, body, and soul.  Because of the restrictions of space and patience of my readers, I am going with my  gut feeling and writing about that one thing that you, my readers can never have enough of - great food that is light on the wallet. BANGALORE CITY PROJECT PRESENTS
PAYTAY, KOTAY, KERAY, THOTA
AN OLD CITY URBAN SPACE EVENT
8.00–11:30 A.M. ON SUNDAY, 18 MAY 2008

Now that you have explored Gavipuram (the first BCP Urban Space Event, held on March 8, 2008) and the Whitefield heritage space (held on 26 April 2008), it’s time to delve deeper into the City’s history and culture – with the Old City Urban Space Event; a walk titled “Kotay, Paytay, Keray, Thota – Changing Geographies & Fragile Futures.”

The history of a place is writ large on its cultural landscape. Opportunities exploited, imaginations expressed/withheld, memories recollected and forgotten, injustice and inequality negotiated from different positions of power and powerlessness. The city is fraught with complex and not-always-pretty stories.

Energy-inefficient design

This is the Airtel office on Bannerghatta Road, near the Jayadeva flyover. True to the “modern” trend in architecture, the facade of the building is all glass; but look at the effect on the inside.

Since one entire wall is glass, the afternoon/evening sun pours in through it.

This is all very well for cities in cold countries where sunshine is a rare commodity, and buildings need to be heated. But here, where the mercury yesterday was at 34 degrees Celsius, it meant a huge volume of space where things were very uncomfortable.

Here are the staff, who have to sit facing the hot and intense sunlight throughout the afternoon:

The customers also have to sit in the sun, but at least they have their backs to it..and they are there for far less time.

The Airtel office is air-conditioned; I can also guess at the amount of energy and electricity it must be taking to cool down the space heated by the glass design of the building.

The architect who designed Jal Bhavan (it’s the building in the dead centre of that map, next to that “pleated” building) has said that glass is a bad material for architecture in India; it heats up the inside of the buildings, which then have to be cooled down at enormous cost in terms of electricity/energy.

Having been in the Airtel office, I would tend to agree.

Let’s nurture Lalbagh

In the light of the recent spate of tree felling, it’s even more important in this scenario to at least preserve the existing parks and green spaces we have (or soon we won’t have much left).

There’s a “Lets Nurture Lalbagh” cleaning and Awareness Program being held on March 16 morning. Do participate if you can!

What’s being planned:

# A run from Vidhan Soudha or Cubbon Park to Lalbagh

# 5000 volunteers show their sensitivity to nature, love for Bangalore, clean Lalbagh

# An Antique Car Rally inside Lalbagh and onto Raj Bhavan

I don’t have details on the exact time yet and will update as soon as I get it.

VV Puram Food Street not the same anymore

I was at VV Puram a couple of days back & decided to visit the famous area near VB Bakery to eat something. This area is called by different names. Some call it Food Street & others like my friend who resides in that area calls it Circle. It is basically one small stretch of road where hawkers & small hotels sell varieties of food ranging from capsicum bajjis to ‘obbattu’ to the regular idlis & dosas. This specific area has been written about previously as well in Metblogs. (you could check those posts by searching for ’street food’)

It’s all about the money & to me it is not funny

Money, money, money! Everybody out there seems to be hell bent on making money. According to people out there everybody has loads of money, so charge what you want, ask what you want, quote what you want and you’ll get it. Yeah that is all. People will buy it, consume it & pay for it, no questions asked.

A few incidents over the last few days have completely stumped me. To me it just doesn’t make sense. Let me know if it does to you.
