The Gift of 07.07.07

This seventh day of the week, on the seventh day of the Seventh month in this seventh year of century… termed as “lucky day”…So what do I wish for today?

I wish ‘Taj Mahal’ to retain its status as one of the new seven wonders of the world… Don’t you?

As on the 8 p.m. EDT Friday voting deadline, in the top 10 were the Acropolis in Greece, Chichen Itza pyramid in Mexico, Eiffel Tower in Paris, Easter Island, Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Taj Mahal in India and Jordan’s ancient city of Petra. I am just not able to understand the idea behind global voting to select the New 7 Wonders of the world.

Can we declare only 7 to be the wonders of this world? If any ‘wonder’ in the list misses to be in the top 7, does that make this ‘wonder’ no longer a wonder? Only UNESCO’s World Heritage List does justice.

On the top of this, Why a global vote? People of India are voting en masse to Taj Mahal. Chinese to Great Wall, Brazilians to Redeemer. Whats the point? People are not at all capable of judging which wonder should be in top 7. Everybody is voting for their nations’s monument. I am sure nobody would have seen all the wonders in the Top list to judge among them.

@ Vinay – precisely! Who decides there should only be 7 wonders? And what is this mob styled online voting business? If such a poll is held again in 5 years time, every other wonder of the world will be in China and India!

And why have a “static” list. If this non-profit organization really wants a ‘current’ list, let them keep a running poll on their site. That way I can have my X wonders “of the day”, X could be 7, 10, 100 or whatever :)

Or may be, google can have a new “wonder” search page!

    Ok, enough.
