Weekend Getaway: Honnemardu

Honnemardu is supposed to be a village submerged under the Linganmakki reservoir in Shimoga district. On the way to Jog Falls one has to take deviation from a village by name Hiremane (2 km from Talguppa). A drive of 10 km from Hiremane will take to Honnemardu, where there is Indian Institute Adventure and Application (IIAA) run by S.L.N Swami.

The institute conducts many aqua activities such Swimming, Coracling, Canoeing. These activities are conducted in the reservoir which is some 80kmx50km and one can see water until your sight gets lost. The water is pretty clean and left virtually untouched.

Other activities include overnight camping at nearby island. Participants have to collect firewood, pitch tents, make campfire. All the activities are conducted under supervision and assistance of institute volunteers.

If one is looking out for luxuries, then Honnemardu is not the right place. Participants literally have to do all things by ourselves, wash dishes, carry our tents, get firewood etc. Music, cigars, drinks, non veg and plastic are not allowed.

To participate in the activities a slot has to be booked in advance (2-3 weeks usually). Check this link of IIAA for contact details, description of activities, Do’s and Don’ts, stuffs to carry etc.

    Great place for a weekend.

i know a similar place. Manchinabelle Dam near Bangalore. hardly 35 kms from Majestic. no hotels or urban life there. typical rural village. good place for a day though..
