The Bandstand, Lalbagh

Lalbagh, the beautiful garden that is one of the lungs of Bangalore, has some beautiful structures in it; the most famous one, of course, is the Glass House, made in the fashion of the Crystal Palace.

But just beyond it is the equally lovely Bandstand, pictured here:

During the British Raj, when the British families used to “promenade themselves” or “take the air”, there was a band playing, standing under this structure, and serenading visitors with the music.

Of late, the Bangalore Government has launched very laudable initiative to have live music there each weekend; the music starts at 6am and goes on till 8 pm. I have also many fond memories of listening to excellent jam sessions, jazz and jugalbandhis here.

The Lalbagh Bandstand, with its lovely shape, its not indoors/not outdoors ambience, and its commitment to music, is one of the things I love in this city!

And do not miss the two towering firs in the background, which add so much beauty…

And if you go down further, you will come to the “Tree of Stone”….ah, does that pique your curiosity? Go find out for yourself…or I could take you around Lalbagh and share some of the wonders of my favourite place with you!
