Airport – How to name it?

When the Civil Aviation minister recently confirmed the opening date of new Airport, he also said that:

… Karnataka government has suggested the new airport be known as Bangalore International Airport … as … general policy, the name of the city is retained for naming … since … visitors in general, and foreign tourists in particular, find it easier to identify the airport when it is named after the city it services

Ah! How boring. And Mr Minister, the airport would serve a region, not just one city. Anyhow, why not Kempe Gowda Airport, Rajkumar Airport, or more historic Krishna Deva Raya Airport. Or call it Hoysala or Belur airport to create and sustain tourist interest?

Actually, I was a bit surprised to hear that state govt is happy calling it Bangalore Airport. I half expected them to push for Deve Gowda Airport or something. Okay, that was a bad dig, but hey, at least Bengalooru there and not the English Bangalore.

So how would you name it? I half expect the naming issue to surface as we get closer to launch.

Silkboard, In fact there was lot of pressure for government from various community to name the airport under there leaders etc…. I think in order to escape from this pressure & controversy that have gone with city name, However in coming days govt will be definitely face a heat on name & will come up with some name

I vote for Bengalooru/Hoysala/KempeGowda Intl Airport.

I like ‘Bangalore International Airport’, but I doubt if it is going to stay like that. Especially since the city itself is going to be Bengalooru.

We will find another news report with the minister saying, Now, wouldn’t it be good to not confuse the foreign tourists further by naming one Bengalooru and the other Bangalore? ;)

Devanahalli International Airport.. Sounds bit difficult.. Kempegowda OK. But, We already have Kempegowda Bus stand. Dr. Raj kumar will be unanimous and unique in all ways. Probably First Air Port to be named after Actor. hmmmm….. Raj Kumar Not Just Actor. GOD!! The King of million hearts. I Stand with Dr. Raj Kumar International Air Port.

My vote goes for “Dr. RajKumar Airport”. I’m not natively from Karnataka, but am here for quite some years – like many umpteen Northies; and now I revere Dr. Rajkumar for what he was/is for Kannadigas (which I didnt realize at the time he was kidnapped – I was up there in North). I think it would be a befitting tribute to his greatness and stature to name the Airport after him.

    Sir M Vishweshwaraya International Airport

@Naren: Hyderabad domestic airport is named after the former actor and chief minister, late N T Rama Rao. So we wouldn’t be setting a precedent if we name this airport after Dr. Rajkumar:)

My vote would go to Sir M Vishweshwariah who is best known for his vision in developing infrastructure for the erstwhile Mysore State.

IMHO, the word international is a bit redundant. I personally prefer a name based on historic places or character. Historical as in old old, not the usual Gandhi Nehru type.

On the other hand, how about selling the naming rights to make some money on the name. Kingfisher Bengalooru airport. Or Colgate Bengalooru airport. Too stupid is it? Use the money generated this way to fund another airport elsewhere in Karnataka.

Okay enough :) back to the match.

How about RK International Airport? (Revanna-Kumaranna International)

Hmmmm……Dr.Raj Kumar International Airport does not sound very good
to me,I understand he is a remarkable, outstanding and pivotal in shaping
the Kannada films(Art)but I think there are a few more who also did
their part to sustain it…….the question here is,Does the name
represents us fellow Bangaloreans?…….and the only thing I can think
about present day Bangalore which unites us is either we were Born and
brought up in Bangalore or Adopted Bangalore as our city (could be for
various reasons). Nothing makes me more proud for the Airport to be
called “The BANGALORE (Bengalooru) International Airport” as it
represents me who has lived and grown up in this beautiful and always
welcoming city……..I cannot see myself representing the name if
    anything else is used!!
If that was the case why not use Kuvempu, Sir M vishveshwaraya,Sir CV
Raman….well the arguement goes on…..we should not be making this
political or castist…….this is about we Bangaloreans and it is important we put
    forward Bangalore this way.
Well RK international Airport sounds interesting….Hahah

    An idea:
Let the name of the airport be Bangalore Airport. If it has to have names why not call the domestic terminal after Rajkumar or Rahul Dravid or as belur/halebid and the International terminal after Vishweshwariah or C V Raman or as Vijayanagara or Chalukya?!

I would like the Bengaluru International Airport or Devanahalli International Airport…

Because of the international airports across the world is called by its regional names

For example.. There are two airports in Washington DC.. one is called Dullus International Airport by its regional name which is one of the good ones.

By naming it Bengaluru International airport we will avoid polarity between people opting for different names dependending on thier interests. There will be more in future as many of you can imagine…..
