Just hang ’em?

Considering the pace with which courts are now handing out conviction sentences its evident that the judiciary is taking a hard line stance at crimes / criminals. Its perhaps not too far from the truth to say that the judges are merely echoing public opinion. Or else, how could you explain this statement, which, in my opinion, is what many of us would feel / opine when confronted / frustrated by the corrupt:

“Everywhere, we have corruption. Nothing is free from corruption. Everybody wants to loot this country. The only solution for this menace is to hang some people in the public so that it acts as a deterrent on others.”

As to what kind of crimes will warrant people to hang from posts is a relative issue. Yet, nothing would please the public like going ahead with the same for even the slightest misdemeanours of public officials charged with carrying out public duty & responsibility. Today’s Deccan Herald reports that

The Lokayukta police, on Tuesday, arrested sub-inspector B M Nagaiah of Airport police station while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 7,500 from one Mahadevaiah.

This is petty and shameful behaviour from a police officer. Unfortunately, like beat policemen who take mamool from footpath sellers and pushcart vendors, it appears that officers have no hesitation in moving up the value chain!

As has been oft discussed, perhaps increasing the compensation of police / public officials in line with market trends and/or cost of living should curb the tendency to look for bribes. Of course, it goes without saying that accountability should also be linked to fatter paychecks. Many would prefer the latter to the former!

No wonder India ranks pretty low on Transparency International’s Global Corruption Barometer 2006 report though respondents cited encouraging signs in curbing it. So how does one fight corruption. For a start, have an e-toolkit ready!

Completely agree with the “need” to hang’em up! A few hung or chained to a post all-day in the sun, say at a central location like Hudson Circle or Majestic, with a sign hung around their neck, will do wonders as a deterrent! Another “civil” way would be to seize all assets from the wife and children of the accused corrupt!

    Corruption is everywhere…
From politician to attendees, most of the government departments are corrupted.
    – I think govt can hike their salaries,
    – Court should punish both the parties’ giver and taker,
    – Punishment should be very severe,
    – So many cases are pending (speed up the procedures, not to drag cases for long time, all the citizens to be treated equally, and no exception for any famous personalities),
    – Public also needs to stop giving bribes.
