Govt Land, Scams & Beneficieries…it’s official now!!

While past few days Mr. A T Ramaswamy, chairperson of joint legislature committee is busy awakening the ‘System’ against the land grabbing mafia deeply enrooted within the system. A whooping 174 government officials were found involved. Surprisingly when the revenue department tried logging complaints with the police of the 366 complaints initiated, 231 had not been registered.

The committee, which has surveyed 1,02,623 of the 1,18,668 acres of revenue land in Bangalore, has found that 25,713 people had encroached upon 18,447 acres. He has written to the legislative council chairman, assembly speaker, home and revenue principal secretaries and the police alerting on the issue.

Here are few of his stunning remarks reported via media…..

>> If a government department’s complaint itself is not registered, what about the common man? I called a meeting of the home and revenue principal secretaries along with the DG & IGP and Bangalore police commissioner on February 24 and pulled up the police on this issue

>> After this, 469 complaints were registered against 943 people, of whom 102 were arrested. By March-end, about 5,000 acres will be freed from their clutches.

>> There are 174 government officials who have helped these people gain false records or assisted them in other ways. Of these, four are of the rank of deputy tahsildar, 69 are revenue inspectors and 101 are village accountants,” Ramaswamy said. Eight of them – one deputy tahsildar, four revenue inspectors and three village accountants – have retired.

>> There are presently 506 cases against revenue land encroachers, of which 92 are in the Karnataka High Court, 179 in the Karnataka appellate tribunal, 183 in the city civil court, 52 in the deputy commissioner’s special court. The committee still had to survey 16,025 acres of encroached land.

The committee has asked the revenue department to file criminal cases against all the guilty government officials. Ramaswamy further suggested that the present ordinance against land grabbing be replaced by a comprehensive Act that provides for reclamation of all government land.

Despite few citizens and media reporting on such issues, with this Revenue Department disclosure now has become official!
