In the media world, its called a photo-op. The dictionary defines it as a “chance to get publicity.” Only this time, it appears that a newspaper is doing the same to promote itself / a sister edition using a picture perfect former PM.

Personalities (pinups?) earlier featured include Aishwarya Rai (how could I forget? Jeeeeezzz!) Anil Kumble, Narayana Murthy, Prakash Padukone & the one and only, the ever flamboyant Dr. Vijay Mallya!!

Seeing the above photo in today’s TOI, I’m positive that this question would have struck many readers: Just how many brownie points would have been scored by TOI with the high & mighty? Certainly its going to boost their image in the corridors of the present powers that be!

You might snap at me for all this negative carping here from my side but I thought, in all transparency, I must share my thoughts on this matter.

Am I blowing up this issue? Time for a finish then, a photo-finish?

    TOI sucks… There is hardly any news on it, its overwhelmed by ads and then you have the scantily clad women / men on its supplements. Obvious spell errors in every edition and some even on the very front page. All this shows how much attention and work goes into it.

    They seem to be more focused in getting the circulation up rather on delivering news. I buy and read it once every week during the weekend, just for entertainment reasons :P

    For local news, kannada papers like praja vani and sanjay vani are excellent.

    But I have to say that they atleast get the gossip stories about celebrities pretty much right.
