The Times of India in Kannada

It has been a few days since Times of India has come up with a Kannada version. This is the first time that the Times of India is published in a regional language. I bought a copy for two days just see how it is.

The first thin that I noticed that it is a translated newspaper! There is little news that was created exclusively for the Kannada edition and nearly all of it is translated from the English version of the newspaper. A few news items are re-organized to suit to the readers. Here and there you see some exclusive news but not much of it.

So why another newspaper when ToI group is already publishing a highly popular Kannada Newspaper(Vijaya karnataka)? One thing I can guess – to improve their already high market share in Bangalore to near monopoly levels. It is also likely that there is a good market for a translated newspaper. Traditionally, Kannada and English newspapers have always provided different kind of news. While English papers tried to project a modern outlook of news, Kannada papers have remained comparatively traditional. And almost all of them concentrate more on the news of entire state rather than the city. ToI Kannada fills this gap, and hence creates its own market amongst Kannadiga readers. And since entire content is translated, their costs also remain minimal. From whatever I have heard from someone who knows someone who knows someone in ToI office, the response for the paper has been very very good and above their expectations, and they are already thinking of repeating the exercise in Mangalore and Mysore!

when TOI bought VK, they also bagged Usha kirana, a mid day paper frm VRL group. but at the time of buying Usha kirana was on death bed :) TOI couln’t digest the fact of dissolving this paper, so used all the resource n man power of Usha kirana to this translated version.

Already ppl of karanataka have pathetic opinion about bangalore times & its culture.

Sooner or later, the 2nd of innings of Usha kirana aka TOI in kannada will be cremated in the junction of MG road.

The very Second Day of its launch. Place Silk Board. Time around 8 in morning. Young Boy with Red T-Shirt(TOI in Kannada on it), Distributing New Kannada daily. Some Cab drivers refusing it Even when its Free!!?? Thats the agressive marketing tactics of TOI.

The Only reason for TOI buying VPL is to create hurdles for arch rival Hindusthan Times entering south. So, they bid More amount and bought Vijayananda Publishers. The usha kirana low cost (1.50) news paper was not doing well and gradually TOI stopped UK. But they realised still there is good market for low cost paper(without Pull out) and Came up with TOI Kannada. Its pure Translation Nothing else. No Bangalore times!! :(
The Front page looks Exactly to English Version.
The Business Part is Very intrsting to read. The all New kannada words difficult to understand. The last Page is all movie stuff Extracted from bangalore times.

Its toooooo early to comment on the Feature of this news paper. Coz its not Bread and butter for Benett, colomn, & co. Estd. in 1898(if am not wrong).

TOI is all gossip .. Today’s paper has Ash & Abhishek’s public appearance in the middle and CM’s new dreams in the corner. Rapist & Shipa shetty again higlighted and vision 2007 / civic summit goes to page 4 !!!

FUCK U PPL.. TOI is very nice newspaper if you cant digest Bangalore Times then dont read it no.. its so simple. Times of India provides all the news and events of the city which even a kannada newspaper cant cover. compare prajavani and TOI & prajavani is way too behind.

Mind your language sir, yes BT is good. it is providing enough material to keep young gen in its readership. The thing is that TOI is just killing competition through price war. They are going to close Vijaya Karnataka after two years, and converting vijay times to Bangalore Mirror a tabloid version of BT (Blr Times). TOI is not concerned about “The Journalism”, they are here to do business as a true businessman they are killing competition and acquiring and putting pressure on others. Half of the Usha Kiran employees left the job and joined other publication. One of the appreciable thing of TOI kannada is the salary given to its employee (though there is some partiality in paying all employees equally but,) they pay well. we have to wait and see what is in the fate of KANNADA KOURNALISM.

TOI is all about brand advertisements. News is also a brand. Shilpa shetty is a brand, Bangalore is a brand, actress Ramya is a brand (ambassador), Sudoku is a brand, even some B-grade actress is also a brand and lifestyle of some page 3 bimbo is also a brand. What you are reading is advertisements of all these brands! News is missed somewhere in between. This paper’s main aim is to educate the readers about the lifestyle of actresses, models and wannabe page 3 bimbos.
