Door-to-Door Garbage Collection…
– This could be one of the Best initiatives of Bangalore to offer
How many of us would realize door-to-door daily garbage collection is a bliss! For those immigrants from US and UK where this privilege is only once a week and that to for segregated waste, this facility in Bangalore is worth a salute!
This facility somewhat balances the absence of garbage bins on the city roads…former Chief Secretary A Ravindra has revealed year ago that 88 per cent of people make use of the facility of door-to-door collection of solid waste, while 4.7 per cent depend on waste bins and 7.3 per cent dump garbage on the roadside or vacant sites. However, the segregation of garbage at source is yet to catch up.
Despite few issues faced recently when the owner of the land, where the garbage was being dumped till now, has refused permission for dumping, the initiative continues…
Segregation of garbage has to be done first. This idea was mooted in Chennai some 10 months ago but hasnt caught up.Hope it happens in Bengaluru.
I have seen these things, but they dont come to my street. I am from New York and garbage collection over there is followed regularly. Here garbage collection would be feasible if another problem is resolved along with this…stray dogs. If we leave the garbage outside the houses to be collected…the dogs immediately make a mess of it by destroying the bags and “trashing” the trash.
Plus there should be rules and regulations put into place by the government regarding garbage disposals. I am sure there are some rules but where is the advertisement for it. People tend to do things as they see….show it on TV…put up bill boards as a start.
Being the IT capital of India, this would just a start of a greater bangalore.

Thanks Shek and Irfan.
@Irfan, i guess this facility is there depending on localities where the van comes regulalry and residents carry the garbage out and put it in the van, they do not store it outside the house for dogs to mess around! I am not sure if this is consistent but BMP is doing it’s best given the system we have in place. There are challenges on wages allocated for collection, cleaning and disposal and the system is not self sustaining model yet.
