Sankey, Unforgettable name

Bangalore has got two places with the name Sankey, One is Sankey Lake & other is Sankey Road where it is named after R.H.Sankey, who is one among who has given a modern touch to Bangalore.

English men R.H.Sankey was Chief Engineer in Mysore presidency from 1864-1877.

Contributions of R.H.Sankey to Bangalore.

He was the architect for today’s High Court Building (also called as Attara kacheri) in Bangalore which was built in 1864-68, First the entrance of High court was towards Cubbon park & today’s straight road from Kasuraba road through Cubbon park was planned by himself.

He also planned & started a drinking water lake for the growing Bangalore in 1874, But due to unfavorable reasons the lake was not able to complete on time but it was completed in 1882 & it was named after a person who was main cause for it “Sankey” Lake.

He was the architect for today’s Government Museum (1876-77) in Bangalore.

During the heavy drought in Bangalore he has initiated to restore many lakes like Sampangi lake, Miller lake etc…

He also built an economical guest house at Nandi Hills (now it is converted into a small size hotel) for common people.

Also there are many more buildings has been constructed in his time.

    Krishna,
    Yes people call this tank now but initially it was constructed as a lake but the later due to its purpose i.e.water supply to growing Bangalore people identify it as tank also personally I feel that the size is also reduced now.
    All the doucuments still mention it as Sankey Kere (Kere in Kannada =Lake)
