Song & Dance

A week has passed by since my return and things have been hectic but shaping up well.

With little time for relaxation but following a previous post by Thejesh, I was quite piqued about what Radio Mirchi had to offer considering their presence in Chennai too.

While it would be premature to talk about ‘Kanglish’, its development and impact, I find it most refreshing to find a mixture of Kannada, Hindi and English on the channel. I feels its perfectly in keeping with the times and representative of Bangalore’s cosmopolitan outlook. Enough number of detractors, naysayers and chauvinists abound who will voice otherwise.

I’ve written about this earlier & I do not mind saying this again – there is nothing in the world quite like songs of yore. Giving a sublime voice to this feeling of mine is this song by VaniJairam, from the film Manasa Sarovara and lyrics by G.S Shivarudrappa:

Haadu, Haadu
Haadu halayedaadarenu
Bhava nava naveena

In stark contrast to its timelessness, I chanced upon a new one – ‘Excuse me’ or some such which made my blood boil. How could anybody write such trash? How could anyone even write music to such nonsense? Who would want to lend their names to such puerile stuff?

But then, that’s life, isn’t it? The lucre of money will make some make a song and dance about or around anything.

All in the name of ‘freedom of expression’!

:)

About the songs of yore- I agree completely. Nothing to beat their melody and the beauty of the lyrics. Will write a post on some of my old favorites.
As for the Kanglish, I am not sure I am a great fan of that although as you say, it reflects reality. In fact most youngsters don’t speak much kannada which is a sad loss. I somehow love to hear every language spoken without any mixing – It is so beautiful.
