Bangalore’s Internet Presence

So much is talked about Bangalore’s contribution to information technology.

I wondered how much of Internet presence does Bangalore have and how good it is. I did a little bit of “Google” and here are some observations.

1. A very well written article on Wikipedia – result of a good community effort!

2. Google returns about 47,500,000 results for the search term “Bangalore“. But, I’m not so happy with Google’s links on selecting the “Refine results” option.

3. Google trends has some interesting results:

* We are the number one city for the search term “Software“.
* It is number three though for terms “Stock market” and “Kannada

(Edited to add: I want to underscore the fact that these are normalized data and not absolute! Thanks to Ambar!)

BTW, we were the 45th city to be included in Metro Blogging.

What is your interesting observation on Bangalore’s Internet presence?

    You’re misinterpreting the Google Trends results.
    We’re not the “number one city” which searches for the term “Software”. These trends are normalized and do not talk of absolute search numbers. It means that we’re the city where the highest proportion of searches are for Software.

    @Ambar:

    Thanks! I did know that they are normalized.

    I want to emphasize the fact that we still have lots of people in the silicon valley of India who think they can get good results just by using the generic term “software”!!!

    Just goes to show the Zeitgeist of our city!

    I’ve edited the post to clarify.

    Thanks Kanth, hate to nitpick, but:
    I want to emphasize the fact that we still have lots of people in the silicon valley of India who think they can get good results just by using the generic term “software”!!!

    Thats probably not true. The search trend for “software” shows searches containing “software” in them. So if you searched for “software architecture”, it would be counted against both “software” and “architecture” AFAIK.

    In fact, Bangalore also tops trends for “architecture” searches:
    http://www.google.com/trends?q=architecture

    I think we can safely assume that this is actually due to people searching for architecture in relation to software!

    @Ambar:

    Yup.

    I noticed that “software architecture” within quotes (actual phrase) has Pune on top and without quotes leaves Bangalore on top.

    But I also noticed that Google is playing it safe with the following disclaimer:

    “… it is based upon just a portion of our searches, and several approximations are used when computing your results. Please keep this in mind when using it.”

    From what I have seen, I think Bangalore has by far the largest number of internet cafes cheek-by-jowl, in the country.

    @Bangalore guy:

    That’s a nice point.

    When we were searching for the logical presence you reminded us about the physical presence by way of the nodes in Bangalore.

    Thank you. Well, the logical needs the physical, no doubt! ;-)

    We don’t have a decent map online yet!

    It is a pain !
